RULER Approach

RULER is a research-based approach to social and emotional learning developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the foundation for children and adolescents to develop the ability to be successful in school, college, the community, and the workplace.

Monthly lessons will teach or reinforce a component of RULER. RULER is an acronym for the 5 key skills of emotional intelligence:

  • Recognizing emotions in ourselves and others
  • Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions
  • Labeling emotions accurately
  • Expressing emotions appropriately
  • Regulating emotions effectively

Emotional Safety

Students learn best in a safe learning environment. We acknowledge that kids can be mean. When kids don’t feel emotionally safe they have a hard time learning or wanting to come to school. Students are trained on the difference between bullying vs. being mean or rude, tattling vs. telling, and how to manage difficult situations.

  • Students are expected to follow STOP, WALK, TALK to problem-solve with peers. Doing so builds their resiliency and confidence.
  • When a student is told to stop doing something they are expected to stop.
  • If the student(s) is in danger, it’s a safety concern, or if the mistreatment is a repeated offense they need to report the incident to an adult.

What if the problem doesn’t stop? Report it again, and again, and again...
